Material Notes, Anti-Skid R11 Ceramic Floor Tile

Anti-skid ceramic tile is the right specification for any floor that will get wet, bathrooms, balconies, kitchens, pool decks, hospital corridors, restaurant kitchens, building entrance lobbies during monsoon. The technical name is “R11 surface-textured ceramic floor tile,” and it is what Kerala building codes effectively require for wet-area residential.

Most accidents on Kerala domestic floors happen on:

  1. Bathroom floor (especially during shower → bedroom transition).
  2. Balcony floor during monsoon.
  3. Kitchen floor on Indian-style washing-day.

Specifying R11 anti-skid for these locations is not a luxury. It is what insurance assessors and your future self will both want.

What R11 actually means

The R-rating measures slip-resistance angle in degrees, on an oil-coated surface, measured per DIN 51130.

RatingAngleUse case
R96-10°Dry interior, drawing room, bedroom
R1010-19°Light wet, bathroom dry zone, kitchen
R1119-27°Wet zones, shower floor, balcony, pool deck
R1227-35°Industrial wet, slaughterhouse, brewery
R13>35°Industrial heavy, chemical plant

R11 is the residential and commercial wet-area default. R12 and above are industrial. R10 is borderline for residential bathroom and should be specified only for the bathroom dry zone, never the shower.

Sizes for Kerala bathrooms

The right size depends on your bathroom dimensions:

Bathroom sizeRecommended tileWhy
Small (<30 sqft)300×300More joints = more grip; less waste on cuts
Standard (30-60 sqft)300×300 or 400×400Either works
Large (>60 sqft)400×400 or 300×600Fewer joints, cleaner look
Open shower300×300 onlyJoints required for water drainage to drain

Where to use it

  • Bathroom shower floor, non-negotiable R11.
  • Bathroom dry zone, R10 acceptable, R11 preferable for consistency.
  • Balcony / open terrace, R11 monsoon-grade.
  • Kitchen floor, R10 minimum, R11 for active washing kitchens.
  • Pool deck, R11 with shot-blasted finish.
  • Building entrance lobby, R11 within 3m of door.
  • Stair tread external, R11 with nosing strip.
  • Hospital corridor, R10 standard, R11 in wet zones (canteen, water dispensers).

Installation specifics

Anti-skid tile installation differs from standard tile only in:

  • Joint width, 3-4mm (vs 2mm for glazed) to allow water drainage.
  • Grout, epoxy or cement-polymer; avoid plain cement grout (cracks under repeated wet-dry cycles).
  • Substrate fall, minimum 1:80 fall to drain in shower areas, 1:100 on balconies.
  • Waterproofing membrane, applied before tile, painted up 200mm onto walls.

We do all of this. Standard tile-layer labour borrowed from a site often skips the membrane application, that’s why so many older Kerala bathrooms leak into the slab below within 4-6 years. We do not skip it.

Common questions on Anti-Skid R11 Ceramic Floor Tile

What does R11 slip rating mean? +

R11 is a slip-resistance classification under DIN 51130, measuring the angle at which a person walking on the surface (with oil-coated leather) starts to slip. R9 = mild slope, R10 = bathrooms, R11 = wet kitchens and external paths, R12 = industrial. R11 is the standard for residential bathrooms and balconies in Kerala.

Can I use anti-skid tiles in a kitchen? +

Yes, and we recommend it for kitchens where there is regular water spill (Indian-style washing) or oil-spill risk. Matte R11 tiles in 300×300 are the practical kitchen-floor specification, even where the rest of the home uses larger format glazed.

Why are anti-skid tiles cheaper than GVT? +

Ceramic body is fired at lower temperature than vitrified porcelain, so material cost is lower. The surface design is glazed rather than printed-through. For wet-area floor use the durability difference is irrelevant, ceramic outperforms many GVTs in slip resistance and is fine for the application.
