Tan Brown Granite
Tan Brown is a fine-to-medium grained granite from quarries in southern Telangana, characterised by a chocolate-brown base with pink-and-black mineral flecks. Default specification for budget kitchen counters in Kerala. Hard, low-maintenance, takes a deep polish.
Material Notes, Tan Brown Granite
If you ask three contractors in Kerala what to put on a budget kitchen counter, two will say Tan Brown. The third will say Black Galaxy.
It’s a fine-to-medium grained granite quarried near Karimnagar in Telangana. The base reads as a warm chocolate brown; the mineral flecks are a mix of black biotite and pink-toned feldspar. Under a polished finish the result is deep, dark and pattern-rich, visually similar to a moodier Baltic Brown but at half the cost.
We hold ~9 000 sqft of Tan Brown in three thicknesses at our Kundannoor godown at any given time, with regular truck arrivals from the source quarry.
Why it’s the default kitchen counter spec
- Hardness and breaking strength, among the highest of commercial granites. Resists chipping at sink and hob cutouts.
- Low water absorption (<0.4%), handles spills, citrus, hot pans without etching.
- Visual forgiveness, the dark mottled base hides daily marks. Counters age slowly compared to lighter granites.
- Cost, at trade-banded on enquiry delivered, it’s the lowest-cost path to a counter that performs like a counter should.
Edge profiles we stock
- Half-bullnose, most popular for kitchen counters. Soft to the hip, comfortable, no sharp arris.
- Full bullnose, for thick countertops (30mm+) where you want a chunky cap.
- Bevel, clean modern look. Watch for dust accumulation on the angle.
- Mitre, for waterfall side panels on islands. Requires careful pattern matching.
- Straight (eased), minimal cost, sharpest visual line. Specify only if you don’t lean on the counter.
Thickness recommendation
| Application | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard kitchen counter | 18-20mm | 18mm needs a plywood substrate; 20mm self-supports across short spans |
| Kitchen island | 20-30mm | 30mm for cantilevered overhangs without supports |
| Bathroom vanity | 18mm | Plywood-supported |
| Staircase tread | 30mm | Don’t go below 25mm |
| Floor tile | 18mm | Polished or honed; not flamed (flamed is wasted indoors) |
Site templating and fabrication
Standard scope for kitchen counter orders:
- Free site visit within Ernakulam, typically next-business-day after enquiry.
- Digital templating, laser measurement, AutoCAD layout shared back for sign-off.
- Workshop fabrication at Maradu, cutouts, edge profiling, polishing.
- Installation by in-house crew, including silicone joint sealing.
Total turnaround from site visit to installed counter: typically 7-10 working days, including drying time on adhesive.
Care and longevity
Tan Brown is one of the most forgiving counter materials sold. Daily care: warm water and a stone-safe pH-neutral cleaner. We seal at the workshop before delivery; recommended resealing every 18-24 months for kitchen surfaces, every 36 months for floor surfaces.
Avoid: bleach, vinegar, lime/lemon juice left to sit, abrasive scouring pads, very acidic kitchen cleaners.
Used correctly, a Tan Brown counter outlasts the kitchen it’s installed in.
Common questions on Tan Brown Granite
Is Tan Brown the same as Coffee Brown granite? +
No. Tan Brown has a chocolate base with pink-tone mineral flecks. Coffee Brown is more uniform with grey-brown undertones. They're distinct granites, we stock both.
What's Tan Brown granite cost per square foot in Kerala? +
Ex-stock at our Kochi godown: on enquiry-110 per sqft depending on thickness, finish, and quantity. Trade pricing for 2000+ sqft drops to on enquiry-78. Add trade-banded on enquiry for cut-to-size fabrication.
Will Tan Brown work for a wet bathroom floor? +
Yes, in a honed or leather finish for slip resistance. Polished Tan Brown is unsuitable for wet floors. We do not recommend it for shower-floor tile sizes (too small).
